Rosa
Muñoz "El Bosque Animado"
Location: Galería
Full Art, C/ Madrid, 4
Dates: 1 - 24 October
Using photographs of natural settings as a backdrop and adding the surreal
by superimposing digital images, Muñoz creates some interesting contrasts.
The results are a change of meaning, giving the "artificial" a different
perspective when placed in the context of nature. In the end many appear to
be stage scenes for a theatre.

altarpieces in it's time in Spain before it is moved back to the church.

League

The
history of Real Madrid - so many championships and great players bought with
the finest Spanish money (and recently many, many bank loans) arrives in Estadio
Ruiz de Lopera for a match up of two of La Liga's Champions League teams. This
should be a good match up, and expect many from Madrid to take the AVE down,
hopefully to watch their club lose.

Real
Betis vs. Chelsea
(Champions
League)
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera (Avda. Palmera)
Dates: 1 November, time tbd
Another
clash of two champions from last season. Chelsea, the Premier League champion
versus Real Betis, the Copa Del Rey champs. Chelsea has been coveting Real Betis
player Joachín for several years, but he's thankfully stayed put. This
is also a big family rivalry for me, with supporters of each team on both sides.
¡Viva er Beti!

Gerardo
Nuñez
Location: CHICLANA: Teatro Moderno, C/ Nueva, 20
Dates: 14 October
A
drive to the beach is always worthwhile, especially when Gerardo Nuñez
will be in Chiclana. One of the most talented guitar players of any kind, his
blend of jazz and flamenco offers a clean sound with spectacular skill. I highly
recommend either "Calima" or "Jucal" two of his CDs which
have made their way into my collection over the years. Plus after what I promise
will be a good show you can hit the beach in the last few weeks before it gets
too cold!
José
de Ribera "Bajo el signo de Caravaggio"

Spanish
born painter Jose de Ribera lived most of his life in Italy. Much of his early

Spaniard" in Italy, he was one of the first famous Spanish artists, well-known
in his time outside of his home country.

Dates: 25 September, time tbd
There
were two champions last year in Spain. Barcelona won the league title, while

which will influence the standings at the top of the table. Tickets can be purchased
ahead of time at the stadium, or the day of the game if you show up a few hours
in advance.

Location: Estadio Sánchez Pizjuán,
(Avda. Eduardo Dato)
Dates: 15 September, 21:30
Sevilla
came close to being in Champions last year, but thankfully Betis held on to
deprive them during their 100 year anniversary. But Sevilla did make it into
the UEFA Cup, and they take on German team FSV Mainz 05. Tickets can be purchased
ahead of time at the stadium, as well as the day of the match. While not a Sevilla
fan, it's nice to see both teams in European competition which brings a lot
of visitors to Seville!
Real
Betis vs. Liverpool
(Champions League)
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera (Avda. Palmera)
Dates: 13 September, 20:45
The
UEFA Champions League comes to Seville for the first time ever thanks to Real

one of the best leagues in the world. Liverpool is up first in September. Tickets

photographs around Seville and you will certainly enjoy this one. Entrance is
free and you can take in a little history of the church while you're there.

REM
Location: Nuevo
Estadio los Carmenes (Granada)
Dates: 25 May
Web: musiserv.com
REM made a stop in Madrid and Barcelona the first time around. There
were plenty of people who had problems getting tickets as promised after online
pre-sales failed. This time they plan four stops, with only Granada being the
first date finalized. Will they make it to Seville as well? I doubt it, so it
may be the best chance to see them down south.
Betis
- Sevilla
Location: Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 8 May (22:00,
TV: Canal Sur)
They generally happen just twice a year and tickets can
be hard to come by. But nobody wants to miss what is always a great rivalry
match - the two first division fútbol teams in Sevilla square
off with serious implications for the UEFA and Champions. If you head to the
game it might be best to hide your team preference no matter who you pull for.
At least until you get close to the stadium if you are a Betis fan. You can
buy tickets in advance at the stadium or show up the day of and try your luck
with resellers. Photos of Betis.
Sevilla
- Real Madrid
Location: Estadio
Sanchez Pizjuan

television)
Real Madrid comes into Seville on a roll, hoping to close
the gap with league leader Barcelona. Beticos everywhere will of course
be pulling for a Real victory, hoping to overtake Sevilla in the league table.
Why is there only the team crest for Real Madrid to the right? Well, I am a
big Betis fan, and there is simply no way another Sevilla crest is showing up
on my page. (It was hard enough just to put one up above!)

Festival
del Mosto
Location: Umbrete (15 minutes from Seville),
Recinto Ferial (Fair grounds)
Dates: 5 - 6 February
Umbrete is a small town just 15 minutes from Seville which I've gotten
know over the years because of family members who now call it home. It's a great
place for a weekend lunch, and the Festival del Mosto y Aceituna is a good time
to visit as well. The Festival has grown over the years and now features a wide
variety of food and drink which is local to Umbrete. Umbrete is famous for it's mosto, a seasonal white wine which is at it's peak at this time of
year. Aside from wine tasting there's plenty to eat as the bars and restaurants
of the town set up stands and offer some of their best cooking.

From
simple sketches of black and white to more vibrant and colorful examples like

my favorite galleries if nothing else for the style of the exhibition space.

the crowds come late March!

Once
again the league leaders march into town to face a Betis team which has been

Location: Guadalquivir River
Dates: October 13-17th
Boasting
160 riders from over 26 countries, this year's Wakeboarding Championship makes
it's first appearance in Spain. Three nights of music on Isla Cartuja will also
be part of the festival, and no, Eminem will not be making an appearance. So
what is wakeboarding? Think of a boat, a guy with a rope and a mix between surfing
and water skiing. It should provide some fun along the river in October. More
info on the official site.

Feria
Regional de Jamón y Cerdo Ibérico
Location: Aracena (hour and a half from Sevilla)
Dates: October 22nd - 24th
Get
down and dirty with the beloved and tasty pig which is served up throughout
Spain. I know that sounds terrible, but during the festival you can learn everything
there is to know about raising these little guys and producing the cured meats
that come from them. Likely to be a vegetarians nightmare, but a culinary aficionados'
dream. Of course of interest to the major producers in the area.
Pintura

Location: Museo de Bellas Artes
Dates: October - January 15

many as 80 works from the Museum in Madrid will be featured, all by Andalusian
artists depicting scenes from the region. Works include those of Francisco Zurbarán,
Julio José Moreno Villa, Aguado Bejarano, Romero de Torres, Domínguez
Bécquer, Gómez Gil and others. The exhibit will then move to Malaga
where it will continue through April. And of course there are plenty of works
in the Museo de Bellas Artes permanent collection which perfectly compliment
this exhibit.

Drum N' Bass; Sep. 24th: Reggae and Dancehall; Sep. 25th: Hip Hop. Graffiti

a unique event.
Carmen in Sevilla CANCELLED!!
Locations: Plaza España,
Parque María Luisa, Plaza de Toros
Dates: September 2 - 12
This was something you didn't want to miss, but you will. For the first
time in history, Seville itself would have been the stage for Bizet's Carmen,
perhaps the most popular opera ever written. In September 2004, the first Seville
International Music Festival was going to present nine unique, all-star performances
of Carmen in Seville, live, open-air, conducted by Lorin Maazel, directed by
Carlos Saura, and using different historic locations in Seville. Was
it Maazel being ill, or was it a question of money? The truth may never be known.
And I had an entire page dedicated
to the event including links to sites about the production and more information.

Santana: Transito de la luz
Locations: Sala de Exposiciones Santa Ines, c/Dona Maria Coronel, 5

good one to see for Chicago natives, this is a series of photos from the 1980's
onwards, many of Lake Michigan and the beaches during various points of the
day, sunrise and sunset. In a city with much life, Enrique Romero Santa captures
the changes of light and shadow over water without people or any of the bustle
of the city.

Black Music Festival 2004
Location: Palacio
de Congresos and La Industrial Copera (Granada)
Dates: March 26-April 2
Web: blackmusicfestival.com
Making it's way to Madrid and Girona, the closest stop to Sevilla will
be in Granada at the end of March and early April. Some acts you don't want
to miss and others who had more of a brush with fame rather than an actual dose
of it, like the Former Ladies of the Supremes, who never actually performed
with Diana Ross during her time with the group. Still a great show with acts
such as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Soledad Brothers and Bob Log III (March
26); Fito y los Fitipaldis (March 27th); John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers and
Joaquín Malahierba (March 28th); The Temptations Review and Former Ladies
of The Supremes (April 2nd).
Imágenes del Quijote
Location: Museo de Bella Artes
Dates: March 1 - April 2
An excellent collection of some of the most famous
illustrations from the various published editions of Quijote over the centuries.
The Museum of Fine Arts in Sevilla has the luck of hosting a "collection
of collections", ranging from the Legado Ashbee collection in New York
to public and private collections in Spain such as samples from the Real Academia
Española. An interesting looks at the artists interpretations of one
of the most personajes in Spanish literature.
