Cruces de MayoCruces de Mayo
Location: Center of Seville
Dates: month of May

Less of an organized event than the famous celebration in Cordoba, much of May in Seville is marked by smaller processions with the younger generation taking part. This is practice of sorts for one day participating in Semana Santa. Some of the youngest create their own pasos or floats and take them through the streets. Altars are also erected in some plazas, accompanied by tables, a bar and food for a celebration that anyone can join in. Photos

El Rocío El Rocio
Location: El Rocío (Huelva)
Dates: 27 May (pilgrimage begins in Seville before)

El Rocío in Seville is really watching the start of the pilgrimage to this small western town. The trip to the town of El Rocío by foot, horseback or carriage is a large part of this annual pilgrimage. It takes several days, with stops for camping, eating and drinking along the way. While in Sevilla you will hear the loud sounds of the cohetes, or flares, as the pilgrims begin their journey west. There are five hermandades, or brotherhoods in Seville, who bring with them their unique sinpecado, a kind of flag or crest. Photos
