A little preparation for Semana Santa to make the most out of the week. Comfortable shoes are a must, a little portable or fold-out seat helps rest your legs and keep your eye on the weather. If you understand Spanish then a small radio will help keep you posted on the events, and of course a copy of El Llamador is the best way to know what procession will be where at any given time. Carry a map so you can find your way around. You can download and print (in pdf format) El Llamador here. If you can't make it to Seville you can keep up with everything online in two ways: Seville's tourist office is offering a live feed of the processions on the page: www.turismosevilla.tv. Or you can go to the Ayuntamiento's web cams dedicated to the metro centro work in Plaza Nueva and Avda. Constitucion. Finally, this year they have given GPS units to representatives of each procession, so you can track in real time where the processions are located. To see where they are, click here. Below is the weather forecast for the week with the probability for rain listed, and as always the first few days look a little wet!

ARCHIVE MONTHLY FEATURE:

Betis vs. Celta
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 7 January - 17:00

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
The second half of the season kicks off on the weekend of Reyes, and Betis takes on Celta in what should be an interesting first game for the new mister, Luis Fernandez. This is also the first game of the 100th year anniversary of Betis, as they hope to work their way out of the bottom of the league table.

Betis vs. Zaragoza
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 11 Nov
ember
web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Victor Fernandez (ex-coach of Betis) and Ricardo Oliveira (ex-player of Betis) come to Sevilla in what should be a difficult match-up for Betis. Zaragoza defeated Sevilla FC 2-0 a month ago, but has also failed to show up against stronger rivals Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in recent matches.

Sevilla vs. Mallorca
Location: Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan
Dates: 25 November

Mallorca has started strong, while Sevilla has started poorly, but are just recently starting to come around in league play. Our old friend Prats is no longer the goalkeeper for Mallorca! Shuld be a good match and hopefully Mallorca will give Sevilla some prolems.

Tour Iglesia Salvador
Location: Plaza del Salvador
Dates: now until 2008!?

web: colegialsalvador.org
When you close down a church for 7 or more years you have to let the people in from time to time. The renovations and excavations going on in Sevilla's most famous baroque church are open for everyone to see...with an advance appointment. The ruins of a mosque and other very important historical items can be seen. And you'll want to take the tour again and again as the progress and new discoveries could happen at any time. It is unique to open up a building during this process. You can find out about the tours by calling 954 595 405. They have now started to hold a number of places for "walk ups", so if you arrive in the morning chances are you can get a slot for one of the tours the same day.

Don Juan Tenorio
Location: Iglesia San Luis de los Frances (c/ San Luis)
Dates: 23 Jan - 1 Apr

web: tcsevilla.com
Zorilla's famous work was the fruit of his time spent in Seville, so there's not a better city in which to to enjoy this production. An interesting venue is San Luis Church, which is one of my favorites in Seville. The recently formed theatre company, Teatro Clasico de Sevilla, is in it's third round of performing the work. Shows weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Tickets can be arranged for ahead of time by calling in the mornings: 954 214 814.

Rebajas - Sales!
Location: Just about everywhere
Dates: January, February
The holiday shopping season is over, and overstock is on sale. Stores are clearing inventory for spring and you can't pass a store without seeing a "Rebajas" sign. Anyway, as January is a slow month you can take a stroll through the center and find just about anything on sale
.

El Deseo Atrapado por la Cola
Location: Teatro Central
Dates: 11 - 28 January
web:
Teatro Central
Most think of paintings when they hear the name Pablo Picasso. El Deseo Atrapado por la Cola is Picasso's first play, written in 1941. Some classify this as a baroque comedy, others as something simply strange.

Don Juan Tenorio
Location: Iglesia San Luis de los Frances (c/ San Luis)
Dates: 23 Jan - 1 Apr

web: tcsevilla.com

Sevilla vs. Betis - Copa del Rey
Location: Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan
Dates: 1 February - 21:00

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
February brings us something special, which has never happened before: 3 matches in one month between city rivals Betis and Sevilla. The first stars on 1 February with the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals being played in Sanchez Pizjuan, home of Sevilla FC.

Betis vs. Sevilla
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 10 February

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Not much to be said for a game that speaks for itself. Betis - Sevilla is the city rivalry, and like any rivalry no matter where the teams are in the league table it is always a battle. This is the regular league match between the two Copa matches. This year Sevilla finds themselves on top, but Betis should be ready to try and knock them down a place or two in the city's derby.

XXIII City of Seville Marathon
Location: Estadio Olimpico
Dates: 11 February

web: www.imd.sevilla.org
Now in it's 23rd year, the Seville City Marathon begins and ends in the Olympic Stadium, just outside the city center. Show up to see them start around 9 in the morning, or finish some 3 - 5 hours later. Many streets will be blocked so you can likely find a spot around the city to see the action.

Skiing: Women's World Cup 2007
Location: Sierra Nevadas (Monachil, Granada)
Dates: 23,24,25 February

web: sierranevadaski.com
After a four year absence on the World Cup scene, the Sierra Nevadas are hosting the women in an official weekend of World Cup skiing. It all starts with the practice runs on 23 February, and competition for the days of 24 and 25 February. The conditions have gotten much better over the last few weeks, so hopefully there will be good snow for the event.

Betis vs. Recreativo Huelva
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 25 February

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
The interprovincial derby! Ok, maybe that's reaching a little, especially in a month with 3 official derbys. But there is always a bit of tension in this match. This year Recre is doing very well and Betis is looking to continue a good start to the second half of the season. And there always seems to be a small, rowdy bunch who make the trip from Huelva to see the match.

Betis vs. Sevilla - Copa del Rey
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 28 February - 21:00

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
28 February is the Dia de Andalucia, or Andalucia Day! And the colors of Andalucia are...Green and White! A nice touch for the final of 3 matches between Betis and Sevilla. This one will decide who advances to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey and will be the 4th and final derby of the season.

Betis vs. Real Madrid - Copa del Rey
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 11 January - 21:00

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Sixteen teams are left in the Copa del Rey (King's Cup). Betis got a tough draw with Real Madrid, and a home and away series for the 11th and 18th of January. The first leg is in Seville at Estadio Ruiz de Lopera with Betis under the direction of new head coach Luis Fernandez.

Betis vs. Racing Santander
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 21 January

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Starting a one week, three game home stand, Betis takes on Racing Santander in a battle of the green-and-whites. This should be an important match for Betis who have a month filled with difficult competition: Real Madrid twice (Copa), Barcelona and Valencia.

Betis vs. Barcelona
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 24 January

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Originally scheduled for December, this match belongs to the first half of the season but was postponed for Barcelona to make a trip eastward. Now Betis will take on Barcelona during a difficult stretch of the second half of the season. This should be a good match!

Betis vs. Valencia
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 28 January

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
We welcome back Joaquin, who unfortunately will be playing for Valencia. Betis lost the the away match 2 - 1 with Joaquin on their side and will certainly be looking for a little revenge. Valencia has had an up and down first half of the season and will be looking for better results.

Noria de Sevilla: Seville's new Ferris Wheel

How long will it be here? At over 60 meters high, it seems permanent, but it's only temporary. Opened in mid-February, rides start at 8 Euros, but you can also rent a cabin with seating for up to 8. Or rent eh VIP cabin, complete with LCD television, plush leather seats, a phone, air conditioning and of course champagne! All for about 100 Euros for 4 people. This should provide some excellent views of the city, so enjoy it while it's here.

Ibn Khaldún: The Mediterranean in the 14th Century: Rise and Fall of Empires
Location: Real Alcázar
Dates: 19 May - 30 Sep

web: Ibnjaldun.com
Unknown by many, Ibn Khaldun is an historic figure with great cultural, political and economic relevance. His work is often considered responsible for the bases of modern methodology in fields such as sociology, history and economy. The figure of Ibn Khaldún serves as a pretext for a broad examination of his time, the 14th century. On display are more than 100 pieces from different parts of the world, in an original exhibition.

Obras Maestras del Museo de Capodimonte

Rogelio Salmona "Espacios abiertos / espacios colectivos"
Location: A. Convento Santa María Reyes (C/ Santiago)

The works of Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona are the focus of this exhibit. Never to take anything away from exhibits themselves, but I always enjoyed this former convent as an exhibit space itself.

Betis vs. Athletic Bilbao
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 10 Sep

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Our neighbors from the north pay a visit to Ruiz de Lopera in the second week of league competition. Did you know Bilbao has always been in first division? Pretty impressive stat. I don't know what it is, but the Betis-Athletic matches always produce some kind of controversy. We'll see what pops up this time around.

Sevilla vs. Betis: The Derby
Location: Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan
Dates: 17 Sep

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
Perhaps the earliest the derby has ever been scheduled, things heat up between cross town rivals Real Betis and Sevilla FC in just the third week of league play. You could pull for Sevilla FC, but why? Green and white are the colors of Andalucia, and Sevilla is the capital of Andalucia. The return match will be played in February at the home of real fútbol, Estadio Ruiz de Lopera, or Benito Villamarin as I like to call it.

Betis vs. Real Madrid
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera
Dates: 24 Sep

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
There's no Zidane, but likely a whole truckload of new, and expensive, players will be signed by the time Madrid rolls into town. Always full of stars, Real Madrid produces large crowds just about anywhere they travel. And with the AVE connecting Madrid and Seville there should be plenty of visitors from the capital in Seville for this one.

Recreativo vs. Betis (Copa del Rey)
Location: Estadio Nuevo Colombino
Dates: 25 October: 21:30

web: www.realbetisbalompie.es
The first match-up this year in league play saw Betis give up two late goals. Now in the final 32 of the Copa del Rey, this is the first leg of a home and home series. At the end of October, it's a good time to hit the beaches in Huelva for perhaps one last warm day, and then head to Estadio Nuevo Colombino for the match that evening.

If you're planning to spend some time by the coast, Cádiz is a little over an hour away by train, and the Museum of Cádiz is displaying the works of Joan Miró. The exhibit features works surrounding his interpretation of landscapes, exploring the concept of harmony between human experience and nature. When you are finished the rest of Cádiz is perfect for a day trip, or just a day at the beach.

La Velá de Santa Ana
Location: Calle Betis (Triana)
Dates: 21 - 26 Jul

A velá is a neighborhood fiesta, generally organized by a nearby church to raise funds. There are several in the months of June and July, but none more famous or bigger than the Vela de Santa Ana in Triana. Just along the river tents, or casetas, are set up for plenty to eat and drink at night. This is a celebration of Triana: painting and ceramics exhibits are on display, indoor football (soccer), fishing and petanca contests are held. At night movie screenings are held in the Plazuela de Santa Ana. For the children there are day time activities which include a scavenger hunt and other competitions. Sound like enough to do? There's still the main attraction! La cucaña, is a competition where the young folks try their luck balancing on a narrow (and greased!) plank over the river as they reach for a little flag suspended by a rope. Those who don't make it fall into the water, and those who do make it to the flag...well, they fall into the water as well.

"Las Fábricas del Sur" (Photography)
Location: Real Artilleria de Sevilla (Avda Eduardo Dato)
Dates: 23 March - 18 June

There's no better place to hold an exhibit about industrial architecture than an old munitions factory! I've always wondered what was behind the doors of the enormous building just on the edge of the Buhaira Gardens. Now the public can take a tour and take in an photography exhibit of factories and industrial buildings in the south of Spain. There will be other events such as conferences which will attract scholars, but the exhibit itself should bring in the public.

Most people want to know what are the must see or do activities in Sevilla. While many already know to visit the Cathedral or the Alcazar there are plenty of other activities which might not make every guide book or be recommended by your friends who've been to Seville before. With the help of some locals and visitors, plus my own experiences, I've put together a list of 51 things you don't want to miss when you're in the city. Well, now it's grown to 57 as it's taken some time since I first started. I hope there's something listed will peak your interest. To find out more take a look at the new section, now appropriately named 57 things you should do in Sevilla.

It's that time of year again, as we enter spring and Seville is at it's best. Semana Santa is the first sign that the season has arrived, with the Feria de Abril just around the corner. Arising from my winter hibernation, I recently noticed on my way to work a large banner hanging over Calle San Esteban, advertising robes and capirotes for the thousands of nazarenos who will march through the streets of Seville. Joining them will be costaleros, floats, "marching" bands, and of course hundreds of thousands of people! The time has come, and for those of you visiting Seville you'll need some time to prepare. To help you get ready, check out my Guide to Semana Santa in Seville.

During most years we only have two weeks to rest between Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril. This year is an exception, with just over a week torest our weary feet and prepare for several days and nights of sevillanas, horses, and fino. It all begins with a little pescaito frito on Monday night, and often ends with chocolate and churros sometime after two in the morning. Throw in some clowns, carnaval games and rides to make your head spin (if the rebujitos do not). The largest of all the ferias in Spain, hundreds of thousands will come to visit. Seville for the Feria de Abril. You can learn more about the event in my section dedicated to the event: Feria de Abril in Seville.

One of the best ways to get to Seville for longer than just a few days is to study Spanish in a language school. There are several private schools waiting to take you in, teach you some Spanish and find you a place to live. From intensive Spanish courses to private lessons - no matter what level - you can find a school in the city center. If you are interested in seeing some of the options, look no further! I've organized a little list of Spanish schools in Seville, with links directly to their web sites so you can request more information. All you have to do is pick a date and select a school. Check out the Spanish Courses in Seville section for more information.

While you won't find much snow (nor freezing temperatures) in Seville, the city has plenty of holiday activities. The streets in the city center will be filled with shoppers and plenty of lights. Chestnuts will be roasting, holiday markets will be opening and Plaza Nueva should be open for us to take a stroll. El Corte Ingles and the local convents will sell enough sweets to cause a sugar crisis. Long lines will form to see the best nativity scenes in churches and stores, and high-velocity hard candy will be thrown at children and adults during the Cabalgata de los Reyes. For more information Feria de Abril in Seville.

Sevilla FC vs. Valencia
Location: Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan
Dates: 18 November (22:00)

Welcome back Joaquin, we sure could use you this season, and I am sure you will be less than welcome in Sevilla's stadium. Still, we will be pulling for you to help Valencia score some goals knock Sevilla down a notch or two in the league table!

We were there on opening night, and were most impressed with the main features of the Chinese acrobats.

Using photographs of natural settings as a backdrop and adding the surreal by superimposing digital images, Muñoz creates some interesting contrasts. (Champions League)
Location: Estadio Ruiz de Lopera (Avda. Palmera)

Another clash of two champions from last season. Chelsea, the Premier League champion versus Real Betis, the Copa Del Rey champs. Chelsea has been coveting Real Betis player Joachín for several years, but he's thankfully stayed put. Sevilla FC vs. Real Betis - The Derby
Location:Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan (Nervión)
Dates: 19 November, 22:00

The first of two league match ups takes place in Sevilla FC's stomping ground. This is a rivalry which gets downright nasty, so if you wear green and white you may want to avoid the area around the stadium and wait until the return match in the spring. The fans will be ready, Lopera will have some choice words for the "other" club in the week leading up to the match and of course Del Nido's bald head will be polished. ¡Viva er Beti!

Gerardo Nuñez
Location: CHICLANA: Teatro Moderno, C/ Nueva, 20
Dates: 14 October
A drive to the beach is always worthwhile, especially when Gerardo Nuñez will be in Chiclana. One of the most talented guitar players of any kind, his blend of jazz and flamenco offers a clean sound with spectacular skill. I highly recommend either "Calima" or "Jucal" two of his CDs which have made their way into my collection over the years. Plus after what I promise will be a good show you can hit the beach in the last few weeks before it gets too cold!

Spanish born painter Jose de Ribera lived most of his life in Italy. Known as the "Little Spaniard" in Italy, he was one of the first famous Spanish artists, well-known in his time outside of his home country.

There were two champions last year in Spain. Barcelona won the league title, while Real Betis won the Copa del Rey. The two met this summer with Real Betis losing to Barcelona. REM made a stop in Madrid and Barcelona the first time around. There were plenty of people who had problems getting tickets as promised after online pre-sales failed. Real Madrid comes into Seville on a roll, hoping to close the gap with league leader Barcelona. Beticos everywhere will of course be pulling for a Real victory, hoping to overtake Sevilla in the league table. Why is there only the team crest for Real Madrid to the right? Well, I am a big Betis fan, and there is simply no way another Sevilla crest is showing up on my page. (It was hard enough just to put one up above!)

It's a great place for a weekend lunch, and the Festival del Mosto y Aceituna is a good time to visit as well. The Festival has grown over the years and now features a wide variety of food and drink which is local to Umbrete. Umbrete is famous for it's mosto, a seasonal white wine which is at it's peak at this time of year. Aside from wine tasting there's plenty to eat as the bars and restaurants of the town set up stands and offer some of their best cooking.

Once again the league leaders march into town to face a Betis team which has been a little down on their luck recently. This time the league leader is Barcelona and the match should be a good one considering the fight Betis put up against Real Madrid and Valencia. Do come to pull for the home team, or even just see them take on a good team, not just to see Barcelona and their stars!

Three nights of music on Isla Cartuja will also be part of the festival, and no, Eminem will not be making an appearance. So what is wakeboarding? Think of a boat, a guy with a rope and a mix between surfing and water skiing. It should provide some fun along the river in October. More info on the official site.

Feria Regional de Jamón y Cerdo Ibérico
Location: Aracena (hour and a half from Sevilla)

Get down and dirty with the beloved and tasty pig which is served up throughout Spain. I know that sounds terrible, but during the festival you can learn everything there is to know about raising these little guys and producing the cured meats that come from them. Likely to be a vegetarians nightmare, but a culinary aficionados' dream. Of course of interest to the major producers in the area.

Carmen in Sevilla
CANCELLED!!
Locations: Plaza España, Parque María Luisa, Plaza de Toros
Dates: September 2 - 12
This was something you didn't want to miss, but you will. For the first time in history, Seville itself would have been the stage for Bizet's Carmen, perhaps the most popular opera ever written. In September 2004, the first Seville International Music Festival was going to present nine unique, all-star performances of Carmen in Seville, live, open-air, conducted by Lorin Maazel, directed by Carlos Saura, and using different historic locations in Seville.
Was it Maazel being ill, or was it a question of money? The truth may never be known. And I had an entire page dedicated to the event including links to sites about the production and more information.

His works from the 18th century school have been gathered, and in some cases restored, by the Fundación El Monte. 35 works are part of the exhibit, including some from various collections in Sevilla such as el convento de Capuchinos, el convento del Buen Suceso, and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Sevilla.

A good one to see for Chicago natives, this is a series of photos from the 1980's onwards, many of Lake Michigan and the beaches during various points of the day, sunrise and sunset. In a city with much life, Enrique Romero Santa captures the changes of light and shadow over water without people or any of the bustle of the city.

3rd Black Music Festival 2004
Location:
Palacio de Congresos and La Industrial Copera (Granada)
Dates:
March 26-April 2
Web:
blackmusicfestival.com

Making it's way to Madrid and Girona, the closest stop to Sevilla will be in Granada at the end of March and early April. Some acts you don't want to miss and others who had more of a brush with fame rather than an actual dose of it, like the Former Ladies of the Supremes, who never actually performed with Diana Ross during her time with the group. Still a great show with acts such as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Soledad Brothers and Bob Log III (March 26); Fito y los Fitipaldis (March 27th); John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers and Joaquín Malahierba (March 28th); The Temptations Review and Former Ladies of The Supremes (April 2nd).

Imágenes del Quijote
Location: Museo de Bella Artes
Dates: March 1 - April 2

An excellent collection of some of the most famous illustrations from the various published editions of Quijote over the centuries. The Museum of Fine Arts in Sevilla has the luck of hosting a "collection of collections", ranging from the Legado Ashbee collection in New York to public and private collections in Spain such as samples from the Real Academia Española. An interesting looks at the artists interpretations of one of the most personajes in Spanish literature.
